Do reusables really save money?

We're all very aware of the cost of living crisis, so saving money has become a priority to us all. Now, more than ever, is the perfect time to switch to reusable nappies.

By the time a toddler is potty trained, they would have gone through roughly 4000 disposable nappies, which when you look at the total amount spent, disposables are very expensive, and extremely wasteful.

So how do reusable nappies actually save money?

To use cloth nappies full time, you are going to need around 25 reusable nappies. If you were to buy our birth to potty nappies individually, this would cost £425. However, we regularly have bundle offers on, this will save you more money.

Along with buying the nappies to begin with, they're going to need to be washed. Therefore we've done some calculations for you! To run a nappy wash, including electricity, using October 2022 price cap figures, water and detergent will cost you around 0.49 pence. Washing twice a week will total 0.98 pence. Going on those figures, if you look at washing twice a week from newborn to being potty trained, you will be looking at a total of around £155.

Therefore the total cost of buying the reusable nappies and the washing cost from newborn stage to potty training is around £580! If you go on to using those nappies for subsequent children, they become more cost effective, saving you even more money in the long run.

We also looked at the top 3 companies of disposable nappies to give you a comparison. We looked at size 3 nappies, 6 nappy changes a day, and the average potty training age of 3. These figures do not include any offers, and pack sizes can vary.

Aldi- £810

Pampers- £1252

Lidl- £430

You will then have the cost of disposable wipes and nappy sacks on top of the above figures. You are looking at a rough estimate of a whopping £1200 using disposables (based on Aldi prices). Premium brands will change this figure, and of course every baby is different, so you may use more or less nappies, wipes and nappy sacks than the estimated figures.

Therefore, going on the above estimates and figures (as of October 2022), reusable nappies can save you over a massive £600!
